The contents of the collection of military service files at Library and Archives Canada are detailed in the Library and Archives blog.

Military service in Canada.
Military service in Canada.

As a general rule, service files contain background, enlistment and service information about all military personnel. After some work the First World War file packages have been completed and may contain between 50 to 70 pages. Some files yet to be reviewed include those of personnel killed-in-action during the Second World War, with the result that some of these files may contain duplicate content, thereby making them much larger – in some cases as much as 400 pages.

Most of us would rather not have to work through 400 pages and it’s to our advantage that Library and Archives Canada done much of the work for us and created these packages containing the most relevant documents.

Following is a list of documents that can be found in these packages for each branch of service.
